The college was initially established in 1925 after the conversion of Temple Medical School to a medical college. The college is affiliated with Bihar University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the National Medical Commission.
The college campus is located on Ashok Rajpath near Gandhi Maidan on the banks of the River Ganges in Patna, Bihar. Patna Medical College and Hospital is famous for providing tertiary-level medical facilities to the citizens of Bihar and also medical education to medical students from Bihar and other states.
The hospital associated with this medical college is one of the busiest hospitals in eastern India, treating a very large number of patients every day. The Bihar government is planning to redevelop this medical college campus by undertaking a major infrastructure project to increase the number of beds to 5,462, making it one of the largest hospitals in the world.
